Securing Foundations at Year 7

What will you learn? 

  • Designed for schools with Year 7 students who haven't met age-related expectations in maths, especially those in the bottom 20-30% of the national cohort at the end of KS2. 

 

 

  • Develop their pedagogic and content knowledge of KS1 and KS2 maths, with a particular emphasis on key concepts. 

  • Practise strategies and refine their practice to best support students who did not meet age-related expectations (ARE) at the end of KS2. 

  • Consider approaches which support all students to reason mathematically and develop a deep and connected understanding of the maths they are learning. 

Who can take part? 

  • Suitable for both experienced and novice teachers aiming to develop their practice to support students in securing foundational maths understanding. 

  • Each school sends a pair of participants, including at least one teacher with QTS, and may include a teaching assistant. 

  • Subject leader to attend the Subject Leader Community sessions 

What is involved?  

  • Participants must attend three full days of workshops. 

  • Complete school-based tasks between sessions. 

  • Teachers should generalise and embed pedagogical strategies explored in the project across their wider practice. 

  • Centrally-produced resources focus on foundational mathematical understanding, building on KS2 knowledge and preparing students for KS3. 

  • Resources include classroom-facing slides and teacher guidance. 

  • Active engagement with teacher guidance and supporting materials is encouraged for maximum benefit.
