who learn with, develop and support colleagues across the region with a shared aim to enable the very best mathematics outcomes for pupils and students across South Yorkshire.
The South Yorkshire Maths Hub is one part of a network of 40 Maths Hubs in England. Fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), they offer over 30 professional development opportunities to individuals, trusts, departments and schools.
The core purpose of Maths Hubs is to help schools and colleges lead improvement in mathematics education in England. Seeking to harness all the maths leadership and expertise within an area, to develop and spread excellent practice, for the benefit of all pupils and students. They are part of the wider development of school-led system leadership in England.
Teachers and trust leaders will work alongside colleagues from other schools/trusts in a small group led by a local experienced teacher with expertise in professional development and the school phase in question. Some projects involve larger groups, coordinated and led regionally or nationally. Meetings are a mix of online and face-to-face. The work takes place over an extended period, across two or three school terms; this allows for experimentation and experience-sharing within the group. Many projects include a parallel objective of embedding improved practice, leading to more secure learning across a trust, department or school.
The South Yorkshire Maths Hub works with schools (nursery/ primary/ secondary/ post-16), teaching schools and universities within four local authority areas: Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster.
The Maths Hub lead school is Notre Dame High School in Sheffield, but Work Groups take place all over our region.
